Yamagata University STEP-YU Exchange Program 2027–2028 – Call for Applications
Yamagata University, Japan, is now accepting applications for the Short-Term Exchange Programs at Yamagata University (STEP-YU) for Academic Year 2027–2028, offering eligible undergraduate and graduate students an opportunity to study in Japan for one semester or one academic year.
Selected exchange students will receive a tuition fee waiver throughout their participation in the program. However, students are responsible for all other expenses associated with the exchange, including travel, accommodation, health insurance, living expenses, and other personal costs.

Study Duration: One Semester or One Academic Year
Eligible Levels: Undergraduate and Graduate Students (depending on the selected program)
Tuition Fee: Waived
Other Expenses: Self-funded by the student
Exchange Program Options
1. General (Ippan) Exchange Program
The General Exchange Program is open to undergraduate and graduate students and focuses on developing Japanese language skills while allowing students to take specialized academic courses primarily conducted in Japanese.
Language Requirement:
JLPT N2 or above
2. Yamagata University Japan Studies Program (JSP)
The Japan Studies Program is designed for undergraduate students interested in learning about Japanese culture and society. The program combines lectures conducted in English with Japanese language study.
Language Requirement: Applicants must meet the applicable language requirement, including:

JLPT N3, or
-
CEFR B2 / IELTS 5.5
Applicants should carefully review the official program requirements before selecting the appropriate exchange track.
General Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet the following basic requirements:

Be an undergraduate student in the second year or above, or a graduate student, as applicable to the selected program.

Maintain active student status at Chiang Mai University throughout the entire exchange period.

Not be awaiting graduation or scheduled to graduate during the exchange period.

Return to Chiang Mai University to continue their studies after completing the exchange program.

Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50.

Meet the language proficiency requirements specified for the selected STEP-YU program.
